What is the Bible?

Christians acknowledge the Bible as being the word of God. The Bible is a collection of books that were written during a 1,500-year period. There are 66 books in the Bible, starting with the book of Genesis and ending with the book of Revelation. God worked through about 40 people to write the Bible.

The Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament contains the first 39 books of the Bible and the New Testament contains the last 27 books of the Bible.

The writing of the Old Testament began during the days of Moses, who lived about 3400 years ago. Moses was inspired by God to write the first five books of the Bible. Many scholars believe that the book of Malachi is the most recent book in the Old Testament and that it was written about 2400 years ago. The New Testament was written during the 1st Century AD, more than 1900 years ago.

The Old Testament contained many laws that the people of Israel were expected to obey during ancient times, including the 10 Commandments. The Old Testament also contains books of poetry and books of history involving, among other things, the people and land of Israel.

The Old Testament, which was completed before the time of Jesus, also contains many prophecies about a Messiah or Christ. (Messiah is a Hebrew word. Christ is a Greek translation of that word. The two words mean the same thing).

These prophecies, among other things, said that:

The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (See Micah 5:2).
The Messiah would suffer and die for the sins of others (See Isaiah 52:13-53:12).
The Messiah would be eternal (See Isaiah 9:6-7).
The Messiah would have a worldwide impact. (See Isaiah 49:6).

The New Testament of the Bible explains that Jesus is the fulfillment of these and other prophecies. These prophecies and many others are described in more detail at aboutbibleprophecy.com. Jesus was born in Bethlehem about 2000 years ago, he suffered and died for our sins and was resurrected. And, Jesus later became the first person in history to be evangelized to people on each of the world's continents.
